It has taken centuries of invaders, conquerors and occupiers from the Greeks, Pheonicians, Moors, Romans and Northern Europeans to shape the Portuguese character. Independent since 1143 and a member of the European Union since 1986, the Portuguese people radiate warmth and hospitality making this an ideal destination to relax and unwind.
Situated on the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula fringed by the Atlantic Ocean, this tiny country, the same size as Scotland is blessed with a mild year-round climate, hot dry summers averaging 70 degrees and warm winters with an average temperature of 50 degrees.
The entire length of the country is covered with virtually continuous unspoiled sandy beaches only interrupted by small traditional villages except for three main resorts of Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve.
This enchanting country has many corners to be explored. Starting with the charming northern town of Porto, named after the local Port wine and located along the Douro River. As Portugal's second largest city, there is natural rivalry with Lisbon. Stunning beaches, secluded coves, crystal clear waters perfect for water sports and some of the best sailing in the area are just some of the qualities that make this town such an attractive destination. Rich in historical architecture and culture, there are many world-class golf courses on which to enjoy a relaxing round whilst the aroma of fresh grilled sardines mingles in the air with the more international cuisine on offer to tempt the taste buds.
The capital city of Lisbon exudes a gentle air of a time gone by with its classical architecture, elegant plazas, palm lined avenues and a myriad of balconies festooned with a riot of colourful flowers. The World Heritage site of 'mosteiro dos jeronimo' and the 'Castelo de Sao Jorge', are highly recommended, as is a boat trip along the River Tagus, indulging in some retail therapy or simply sampling some of the local gastronomy on offer whilst watching the street performers.
The jewel in the crown is the southern coastal resort of the Algarve, rubbing shoulders with the Spanish province of Cadiz. This region is bathed in year round sunshine with a distinctly up market feel offering high quality accommodation, amenities and Praia da Rocha, reputed to be the best beach in the country. As befitting an international resort, water sport activities, golf, shops, international and local cuisine are available and sit side by side with the more traditional way of life which has been bewitching visitors for generations.
