Discovered by Christopher Columbus, this idyllic Caribbean island of Hispaniola has endured a turbulent history with periods of Spanish, French, Haitian and American occupation. Today, the Dominican Republic is a US style democracy covering two thirds of the island with the remaining third occupied by French speaking Haiti.
Imagine the Caribbean and you will picture sugar white beaches fringed with palm trees, crystal clear blue waters, offering every imaginable water-sport, vibrant people and the hypnotic tones of the salsa and meringue carried on the sea breeze. Add to this mix verdant green valleys, lakes, tropical rain forests and four mountain ranges including Pico Duarte, the tallest in the Caribbean,
The main areas of the island are the resorts of Puerto Plato in the north, Punta Cana to the east and in the south the capital, Santo Domingo.
Puerto Plato is located on what is sometimes known as the Amber Coast home to Amber Museum which supplied the Amber in the film Jurassic Park and shops where locally mined amber can be purchased. The northern coast, the Costa Dorada is popular for the many luxury all-inclusive holiday resorts, golf courses, sporting activities and four-wheel drive excursions.
Following the island to eastern most tip, we reach Punta Cana, originally the name of the small village but now used to describe the entire resort area encompassing, Bavaro, Juanillo, Cabeza de Toro, El Cortecito, Mocao and Uverto Alto, boasting 'All Inclusive' resorts accommodation and the Manatee Natural Park bursting with fauna and flora unique to the island. On the south Caribbean coast, Santo Domingo the capital is worth a visit just for the history alone, it is the oldest town in the new world. This area also has the advantage of being the largest no tax zone in the Caribbean to attract international industry into the city and surrounding areas.
In recent years, the island has become the top Caribbean destination. Due to combination of high government investment in the local infrastructure and free trade zones. International investment in high quality all-inclusive hotels, development of private properties including from detached villas to beachside apartments, marinas, high quality golf courses and excellent sporting facilities are underway in order to cater for the increased interest in the island.
Unlike its Caribbean neighbours, the Dominican Republic has not priced itself out of the market, with low prices and added tax incentives, investing in property in the region is an attractive prospect with potentially very high capital growth rate.
